Fortunately, a private association under the leadership of emi-nent New York citizens, impressed with the extraordinary neglectof the adult blind in this State and believing that a clear state-ment leading to a knowledge of their condition here and else-where would make such strong appeal that the remedies wouldsoon be found, was making exhaustive study of their conditionhere and abroad, and was interested in the work planned by the. Kecognizing the impossibility of gathering accurate datain the limited time at the disposal of the Commission — workwhich a like commission in Massachusetts took three years to ac-complish, and the Royal English Commission much longer still —this association with great generosity offered the Commission ever;ypossible assistance with the usd of its existing machinery. Eealizing that the work must be carried on in the summer, ifit were to be completed, the Commissioners unofficially authorizedthe New York Association to carry on that part of it includedwithin the bounds of Greater New York.
