In1771 he went to England, and during the next threeyears lived in London, in intimate acquaintance withEdmund Burke and other distinguished men of thetime. As soon, however, as difficulties arose betweenthe American colonies and Great Britain, the patri-otic sentiments of Izard induced him to side with his native country and he retired to the continent. On December30, 1776, lie was appointed bythe Continental congress commis-sioner at the court of the grandduke of Tuscany. The prosecu-tion of whatever duties were at-tached to this office, however, didnot necessitate a residence in Tus-cany, and Izard remained in Parisand was prominent in the troubleswhich existed among the Amer-ican agents in that city. He wasopposed to Franklin and Deane,and sustained the pretensions ofArthur Lee. In 1780
