In February of 1861 while at his home Brierfield, just south of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Jefferson Davis was informed that he had been elected President of the Confederacy. Davis, a West Point Graduate had served as a US Congressman and Senator from Mississippi as well as Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce.
