Branchial cyst on the neck of an 18-year-old man. A branchial cyst is a soft, fluid-filled swelling, 2-5cm across, that appears on the side of the neck in early adulthood. The fluid inside the cyst is pus-like or clear, and rich in cholesterol. The condition is diagnosed by identifying cholesterol crystals in a sample of fluid obtained with a syringe. Treatment is by surgical excision.
