It afterwards became aRoman station, and is the Rata of Antoni-nus. It stands on the Foss-way, and greatnumbers of Roman coins and other antiqui-ties have been found here. In Doomsday-book this town is styled a city, and is saidto have been very populous. Before thecastle was dismantled it was a. prodigiousbuilding, and was the court of the greatduke of Lancaster Its hall and kitchen arestill entire, the former of which is lofty andspacious, and the courts of justice, whichare held in it at the assizes, are so fardistant as not to disturb each parliament was held here in the reignof Henry V. in which a law was enacted.
