In 1848 he went toKurope as correspondent for severalAmerican newspapers, dealing particu-larly with the nvimerous foreign revolu-tions. Soon after his return to NewYork he became managing editor of theTribune, and held the place till 1862,when he was appointed assistant Secre-tary of War. In 1806 he organized thestock company which bought the old NewYork l^un, of which he became editor- in-chief, continuing so till his death. Inaddition to his work as a journalist, inconjunction with the late George Ripley,ho planned and edited the New American. CHARLES AXDEKSON DANA. Cyclopwdia (16 vols., 1857-63), whichthey thoroughly revised and reissuedunder the title of the American Cyclopcedia(1873-76). In 1883, in association withRossiter Johnson, he edited Fifty PerfectIoemi, and subsequently, in associationwith Gen. James H. Wilson, he wrote theLife of Ulysses S. Grant. In 1897 hisReminiscences of the Civil War and East-ern Journeys were published posthumous-ly; he was also the compiler of House-hold Book of Poetry. He died on LongIsland, N. Y., Oct. 17, 1897. Dana, Francis, jurist; born in Charles-town, Mass., June 13, 1743; son of Rich-ard Dana; graduated at Harvard in1702. He was admitted to the bar in1707; was an active patriot; a delegateto the Provincial Congress in 1774; wentto England in 1775 with confidential let-ters to Franklin; was a member of theexecutive council from 1776 to 1780;member of the Continental
