Second World War coastal defence howitzer, Robben Island Prison Museum, Cape Town, South Africa

Backing up two huge fixed position coastal defence guns on Robben Island, this 2nd World War howitzer also defended Cape Town and the critical sea route for oil tankers from the Middle East. Shells from the 2nd World War mark the rear corners of the concrete platform on which the gun stands, at the top of the road leading up from the Murray Bay harbourside. Beyond the artillery piece, and the island's scrubby bush vegetation, we see the blue waters of Table Bay and the urban developments at Bloubergstrand, on the coast north of Cape Town. The high peaks of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains rise on the skyline.
