Manchester Piccadilly Network Rail car park extension taking its capacity up to 855 spaces, UK

Built in time for the 2002 Commonwealth Games that were held in Manchester, the existing multi storey car park and level deck alongside the station have 592 spaces all together. The £ extension is being built using pre-cast concrete. The entire car park, including the original building, will be clad in a structural steel that weathers to a natural brown colour over a period of time. The cladding has been used successfully on other buildings in Manchester and is seen as a good choice of material for a structure adjacent to the brick warehouses and the station. It also provides us with savings as it is a low-maintenance material that doesn't need painting or cleaning, which will help us meet our cost efficiency targets. Work should be complete in July 2012. The car park holds a Park Mark safer parking award, and we will apply for the entire car park to be re-assessed so that motorists can park in the knowledge that they are leaving their cars in a safe and secure environment. The extended car park will be entered into the British Parking Awards and will also be considered for a number of design and architecture awards. The station has undergone many modifications during its 158 year history to enable it to cope with increasing numbers of passengers and services. Manchester Piccadilly handles over 83,000 passengers and 1,000 train movements every day. It is the northern terminus of Virgin's flagship route to London and offers direct services to other major UK cities, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Cardiff and Norwich. Manchester Piccadilly was originally called London Road station and was opened by the Manchester and Birmingham Railway on 8 May 1842. Further platforms were opened on 1 August 1849. The station was rebuilt in 1866. An extension was opened on 16 May 1881. It was remodelled and renamed Manchester Piccadilly on 12 September 1960, with works completed in 1965. Between 1998 and 2000, over £27 million was spent on modernising the station.
