History of Spain. First Carlist War (1833-1840). Catalonia, Barcelona. After the assault on the citadel on 4 January 1836, and the liberal slaughter of Carlist prisoners without any resistance from the authorities, General Alvarez ordered several arrests, including those of Antonio Gironella and Colonel José Montero y Vigodet.
