Algae grown for biofuel, light micrograph. Algae are photosynthesising micro-organisms that can convert carbon dioxide into large amounts of lipids. The lipids can be converted into biodiesel by reacting with alcohol, a process known as transesterification. Unlike fossil fuels, biodiesel is biodegradable and non-toxic. However it is more costly to produce. Algae can also be cultivated to produce pharmaceutical products, dyes and edible oils, or dried and used as fertiliser or burned as biomass.
