Detail of window and roof of abandoned converted slave hut, Mason Hall Street, Bridgetown, Barbados, 8/06

This is the front window and roof of an abandoned, converted former slave hut. The original hut was constructed from limestone dug from local quarries. The angled (gable) roof is made of corrugated iron or galvanize. The slatted jalousie window is typical of Barbados. The original roof would have been replaced by this galvanize one and jalousie windows installed. Note the decorative fretwork adorning the edge of the roof. A few original slave huts remain largely intact throughout the island. A tiny few are actually lived in today.
