View from Uçhisar fortress over Cappadocia in Turkey. This bizarre landscape was formed from compacted volcanic ash called "tuff" that smothered the land some 30 million years ago. Natural forces have since sculpted a wonderland of ridges, canyons and bizarre phallic protrusions known as fairy chimneys. People have been dugging caves in the soft stone since prehistoric times.
