Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet 5 dec Dutch Father Christmas
Sinterklaas in Holland is Father Christmas. The fact that Santa is an americanised version of Sinterklaas does not help: Sint and Santa struggle for supremacy. Saint Nicholas was a well-known figure for the settlers in North America. Different groups of colonists maintained their own traditions for a long time. The strict Puritans of the 17th century hardly cared for Santa. The Dutchs and German immigrants maintained their Sinterklaas and Weinachten respectively. Santa as we know him today is a mixture of these old traditions: Sinterklaas moved 'his' day to the 25th and became Santa Claus.
