Pillow-Lace.—Real lace, such as that whichoften obtains so high a price, is mostly madeof flax thread, and is produced in the followingway: The lace-worker sits on a stool or chair,and places a hard cushion on her lap. Thedesired pattern is sketched upon a piece ofparchment, which is then laid down upon thecushion; and she inserts a number of pinsthrough the parchment into the cushion, inplaces determined by the pattern. She is alsoprovided with a number of small bobbins, onwhich threads are wound; fine thread beingused for making the meshes or net, and a 42* coarser kind, called gymp, for working the de-vice. The work is begun at the upper part ofthe cushion by tying together the threads inpairs, and each pair is attached to one of thepins. The
