Light micrograph of the slipper-shaped ciliate, Paramecium bursaria. Many green cells can be seen within the body of the protozoan. These are cells of a green alga, probably Chlorella, living symbiotically within the organism. These symbiotic algae provide energy, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen that the animal may use and obtain carbon dioxide, ammonia, salts and shelter in return. Paramecium are common inhabitants of water & soil. They move about by beating the fine hairs, called cilia, which cover their bodies. Magnification x400 at 35mm, Spectral-Rheinberg illumination.
