Male breasts after liposuction on a 64 year old man. Gynaecomastia, a condition where breasts develop in men, is usually due to abnormally high levels of the female hormone oestrogen. Many conditions can cause this, such as liver cirrhosis (where the liver cannot break down the natural oestrogen present), tumours (usually involving the testes, adrenal glands, pituitary, lung and liver) and some medications. Liposuction was carried out in order to remove the excess fatty tissue in the breasts. For the breasts before surgery, see image M165/348.
