But all these apparent stripes, whether they run parallel with or at nearly right anglesto the direction of the hair, are due to almost hairlessspaces separating relatively long and thick ridges. In addition to formiug narrow ridges and furrows, thehair may be so disposed in some foals as to produce wavybands across the croup, and faint lines at nearly right Fig. angles to these across the hind quarters. The fairly widebands across the croup I have especially noticed in half-bred bay foals. These bands, which are never due topigment, and are only seen in certain lights, fairly accu-rately correspond in their position with the cross-bars ofthe gridiron of the mountain zebra. Evidently, in considering whether any given foal isstriped, the narrow tracks of hair, especially evident in thevicinity of the flank feather, the wavy bands across thecroup, and the faint bands across the hind quarters, will TBLEGONY AND RKVERSION. 157 have to be allowed for. Comiug to Mulattos second foal,it may first of all be mentioned that there were no stripeson the face or across the shoulders, nor yet was there adorsal band; and though there were bars across the legs, the bars were not so pronounced as in many purely-bredfoals—foals whose parents had never seen a zebra. More-over, the leg bars were least distinct where they aregenerally most m
