The bases and socles are works of differentperiods. One is very rich and splendid, being a clief-daucre ofRoman art; others, on the contrary, present the Byzantine styleof the sixth century, while for the most part the fronts of thesocles are enriched by bas-reliefs of the ninth century, represent-ing vine-branches issuing from vases. The pavement of the chapel is also worthy of special observa-tion. It is formed of white marble, porphyry, and is among the most ancient examples of pavements of opussectile, in which they abandoned the old system of minute mosaic.
