Thepeculiar design of this decora-tion is found on the armourshown in the portraits of theEarl of Cumberland in thepossession of Lord Hothfieldand the Duke of complete arm-defence,,consisting of pauldron of fivelames, tubular rerebrace andvambrace, and small braceletelbow-cop. One cuff of agauntlet; the other part wanting. One pair of cuissards, consisting of shortcuisse, knee-cop with fan-plate, and jamb, the hinged back plates of whichdo not completely encircle the leg for convenience in riding. The chanfronto match the above will be found under VI, AHMOUR OF THE EARL OF CUMBERLAND (II, 85). 1 At the Jousts held at Westminster, November 17, 1590, Sir Henry Lee resigned his office of QneensChampion in favour of George Chfford. Armour (XVIth-XVIIth Century).—The close helmet hasbreathing openings on the right side and is closed by a large F hook on thevisor. The lower rim is embossed to fit the gorget. The breast is straight-fronted with a marked tapul, and shows clearly the lack of elegance which issuch a marked feature of the later style of armour as compared with that ofthe earlier years of the XVIth Century. The taces are of three lames, hingedto the breast. The pauldrons are of the usual type, but are peculiar in thatthey have small raised bosses to allow for the lynched pins w
