However, one of our valley winds—morelike a hun-icane—came along and entirelydemolished combs, bees, and all. The hiveremained as a reminder of what might havebeen had I done thus and so. After a time, however, I had an oppor-tunity to buy ten colonies of bees in old boxhives at my own price, the owner sayinghed much rather run into a bunch of wild-cats than to tackle a colony of bees. Todigress a bit, Ive often found that these wildcat people have either never beenstung, or else once or twice has been thelimit of their experience; and to see themgo fishing and get chewed alive by blackflies, or to see them sit on their porchesand get liberally stung by mosquitoes withnever a murmur in either case, is, to a rabidbeekeeper, a bit inconsistent, to put itmildly. He was glad to get it, and said hedbe better suited when the last one was family insist that he gave me the beesand sold me the honey at half price. It was not possible to get the bees atonce after I purchased them; and whenthey were finally brought to the house, sev-eral of the colonies had gathered honey insuch quantities that two men had a bit of astruggle getting the hives up the steep gradethat separates river bottom from about six hives we strained out 300pounds of honey, and rendered about 30pounds of pure yellow wax. There is no more fascinating thing inbeekeeping to me than transferring beesfrom an old box into a nice modern hive, and then watching them hustle. Of course, sometimes the hustle is missing along with 397 the queen; but with good care they nearlyalways make good colonies,
