On April 23, 1860, almost 600 delegates, representing 32 states met in the great hall of the South Carolina Institute (pictured here) on Meeting Street in Charleston. It was here that the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession was signed late in December 1860. The building was destroyed by fire shortly after and the Ordinance was adopted in St. Andrew's Hall.
