Mole on the skin of a 46 year old woman. This is a benign (non-cancerous) melanocytic naevus (mole). It is caused by an abnormality or proliferation of melanocytes, the skin cells that produce the pigment melanin. Most adults have between 15 and 20 moles. Most moles are harmless but they can turn cancerous. This is usually indicated by a change in colour or size, or by them becoming itchy.
