Eventually he disposedof his ranch, his cattle business and his South Da-kota properties and engaged in the flour 1902 he built his present flour mill which is equippedwith the largest steel motor wheel in the world. Thiswheel was manufactured and built in Hanover, Penn-sylvania. Mr. Lakin has just installed a private elec-tric plant for the use of the mill and for lighting hisown and his sons home. In view of the splendid success that has resultedfrom Mr. Lakins intense activity and enterprise, itis interesting to note at this point that he received. HISTORY OF IDAHO 843 but a very meager educational training in his father died when he was but five years of ageand as he advanced in years he was forced to be-gin to work in order to help support his w^iuuwedmother and four smaller brothers and sisters. Sub-sequently he educated liimself bv study during theevenings and leisure moments, being now an ex-ceedingly well read man. He earned his first moneya> a boy of eleven years, when he began to do farmwork. In his political attitude Mr. Lakin maintains in-dependence. He is actively mterested in all mattersprojected for progress and advancement and hasserved as mayor of Peck since 1908. His administra-tisn of the municipal affairs of this city has beenfraught with much good for the public improve-ment.
