The Bridgewater Bridge over the Derwent River between Bridgewater and Granton, completed in 1946. Its vertical lift span, one of the few left in the Southern Hemisphere, is Australia’s largest. Bridge openings are rare as river transportation has largely ceased. A heritage construction and a local landmark, it is to be retained for rail, pedestrian and local traffic when a new bridge taking the Midland Highway is built next to it.
