Hieronymus Fabricius (1537-1619). 1859 illustration of the Italian anatomist Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente. Also known as Hieronymus Fabrizio and Girolamo Fabrizio d'Acquapendente, Fabricius made a major study of the venous system and was the first to describe the valves in the veins. He did not realise their true role though, believing that they were meant to impede blood flow. Fabricius' work greatly influenced William Harvey, one of his students. Fabricius also studied chick embryos. His work contained many errors but made embryology an independent science.
