Cataract surgery. Patient's eye being anaesthetised during cataract surgery. The surgeon is performing a subtenon block, in which he is anaesthetising the Tenon's capsule (fascia bulbi), a sheath covering the part of the eye enclosed within the socket. A cataract is a loss of transparency of the lens of the eye. It is extremely common in old age, causing a gradual loss of visual acuity (sharpness) and increasing short-sightedness. The surgeon will remove the abnormal lens and replace it with a prosthetic one.
