Dandelion pappus (Taraxacum officinale), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This is the top of one of the hundreds of seeds attached to a dandelion seedhead. It shows the parachute of fine hairs (radiating lines, pappus) by which the seed is lifted from the seed head and carried away by the wind. Magnification: x53 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
