Knee repair surgery scar. 1-week-old scar on the knee of a 47 year old man. This is from a knee cartilage repair operation known as a MACI (matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation). In this procedure, cartilage cells (chondrocytes) are taken from the patient (autologous cartilage) and then grown onto a collagen scaffold, or matrix, in a laboratory. The matrix is then sewn into place inside the knee to fill the region where the cartilage is missing or has worn away.
