I shutmy eyes now, and see a large company gathered together,in a fast-falling twilight, on a wide plain, that seems as end-less as the ocean ; the blue of the star-studded sky is theonly covering for the heads of this company. In the duskthe white-covered wagons look weird and ghostly. In the glow of anticipation, some onestrikes up this fervid hymn,— the rallying-song of the Mor-mons, — and the wide plainsecho back the stirring nestle by my mothers side,awed and subdued, but con-tent to feel the clasp of herhand and meet the lovinij li-htof her eyes. The song is over,and hosannas and amens resovmd on every side, and outof the blue sky the stars smiledown on the wanderers with acalm, hopeful light. Never, to the ver} last, up tothe time of my abandoning Mor-monism and leaving Utah, couldI hear this hymn unmoved; and even now the very thouglitof it thrills me strangely.
