Molecular model of psilocybin. C12H22N2O4P. Carbon: purple, Phosphorus: yellow, Oxygen: orange, Nitrogen: blue, Hydrogen: aqua. Psilocybin (4-phosphoryloxy-N, N-dimethyltryptamine) is a psychedelic alkaloid of the tryptamine family found in some fungi, genus Psilocybe (more in the caps than in the stems). Hallucinogenic susbstance in the fruiting bodies of Mexican fungus Psilocybe mexicana. Psilocybin-containing mushrooms are called magic mushrooms or shrooms. Most psilocybin mushrooms bruise blue when handled. Psilocybin effects are comparable to LSD. Psilocybin is rapidly dephosphorylated in the body to psilocin which then acts as an agonist at the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor in the brain where it mimics the effects of serotonin (5-HT).
