Walter Schottky. Historical portrait of the Swiss-German physicist Walter Schottky (1886-1976). Born in Zurich, Switzerland, he studied and worked in Germany on solid-state physics. In 1914, he observed changes in the emission of electrons from heated materials (thermionic emission) in a vacuum under a changing electric field. This is known as the Schottky effect. Replacing the vacuum with a semiconducting material led to the Schottky barrier diode. Schottky originated the concepts of electron \holes\" in semiconductors (1929) and ion vacancies (Schottky defects) in crystal lattices (1935). In 1918, he discovered the superheterodyne principle now used in all radios and televisions."
