HILMER, now servinghis second term as member ofthe Board of Supervisors, is a nativeof California, having been born inLockeford. near Stockton, in 1872. theson of (Tharles and Barbara early education was obtained inthe public schools, following whichhe took a course at Healds BusinessCollege. San Francisco, graduatingin 1888. when but sixteen years ofage. His acquirements at the col-lege had included shorthand, and hestarted in business as a stenog-rapher, soon changing, however, tothe more active and promising occu-pation of salesman. In this he wasnotably successful, remaining in theemploy of one firm for seven years,and only leaving the position in order to engage at the age of twenty-three in business for himself as a dealer in dairy produce. His ven-ture prospered, and he is now at the head of the Ered L. HilnierCompany, a wholesale house, with its main place of business in SanFrancisco and
