The rupture, which started from the center ontop and continued to a point about four inches helow the horizontalcenter Hue on each side, was partly by tearint^ of the plate and partlyby shearint^ of the rivets. Only one joint of the furnace was affected. View of Collapsed , strange to say, the shell of the boiler was not so much as will be noted by reference to the illustration, the upper half ofthe front course of the furnace was bent until it stood at an angle ofabout ninety degrees. At the rear the upper half of the furnace waspushed down until it lay almost flat against the lower half. • Statements by persons who had been in the boiler room a shorttime before the accident and who were otherwise acquainted with theplant gave evidence that the safety valves had been blown severaltimes each day and the assistant fireman stated that thev had blown 100 THE LOCOMOTIVE. [October. at about 5 P. M. on the day of the explosion. One man made thestatement that he had seen about two gauges of water in each boilerjust a few minutes before the explosion occurred.
