Il Vittoriale the home of poet Gabrieli D'Annunzio at Gardone Riviera on Lake Garda, Lombardy, Italy, Europe
Gabriele D'Annunzio was Italy's most well loved poet in the 1940s. He was an eccentric and an enemy of Mussolini, although they were both Fascists. To keep him out of Rome Mussolini granted his every wish to make him remain at Gardone Riviera on Lake Garda, out of the way. He would have liked to assassinate D’Annunzio but he was too popular a poet and the nation would have thrown Mussolini out of power. The result is Il Vittoriale, a very eclectic mix of styles and object d’art in a house and garden that is also eccentric. The prow of the battleship that D’Annunzio used to invade Yugoslavia with 100 men is set into the rocks in the garden. D’Annunzio is buried in a mausoleum also in the garden and the house and outdoor theatre belongs to the Italian people. The plane he used to fly hangs in the theatre within the house that tells his story. There is also a museum of his cars and details of his many women.
