Gramme dynamo armature. Historical illustration of an armature from a dynamo design produced by Belgian engineer Zenobe Gramme (1826-1901). Gramme's first dynamo was designed in 1871. Dynamos are devices used to convert rotary motion into electrical power. This is achieved by rotating magnets around wires, and generates direct electrical currents. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
