Improved Dietz Longbekry Wheat. WINTER, OR HAIRY VETCH. (Vicia Villosa.) The Winter, or Hairy Vetch, is growing in favor as a winter cover crop, for which purpose it is well adapted, as it will stand more cold than any other winter legume. It is also valuable for spring pasturage and hay, and when turned under it the best green-manure crop that can be grown. It thrives in almost any soil, and the land will be greatly benefited even when the crop has been grown for hay. The seed may be sown any time from the middle of August until about October 1st, either broadcast or drilled, using seed at the rate of one bushel (60 lbs.) to the acre, and where the crop is to be grown for hay, add one bushel of either Rye, Oats or Wheat to the acre, to help in kee|)ing the vines off the ground, othetwise there will be difficulty in mowing the crop. It is important to use the genuine Winter Vetch (Vicia villosa) for fall sowing, as other varieties will not stand cold weather. We make a specialty of this seed, and will be pleased to quote price for any quantity desired. Leaflet on Vetch free. CRIMSOX OR When sown early enough. Crimson Clover will make good winter grazing for sheep and cattle, and being ready in sprirg before pasturage, it may be cut and carried to the stabled stock. It is also valuable for hay if cut before coming to full bloom, cures rapidly, and is very nutritious, but its chief and best use is as a fertilizer, its capacity for stooling and root formation being very great, and like other plants of its character, gathers nitrogen from the air and stores it in the plants and roots, thus becoming valuable food for crops which follow.
