Tuscan tree surgery with a billhook in March and seed scattered in April for crops: two out of 12 Labours of the Months depicted in finely carved but badly decayed medieval marble bas-reliefs, below a Taurus Zodiac sign, in a Romanesque blind arcade flanking the central portal in the west facade of the Duomo or Cattedrale di San Martino in Piazza San Martino, Lucca, Tuscany, Italy.
Lucca, Tuscany, Italy: pruning trees with a billhook and scattering seed, depicted as the Labours of the Months for March and April, together with a Zodiac sign for Taurus, amongst finely carved but badly decayed medieval marble bas-reliefs in a Romanesque blind arcade flanking the central portal in the west facade of the Duomo or Cattedrale di San Martino. The weathered cycle of carvings, dating from circa 1230, may be by the Lombard master sculptor Guido di Bonagiunta Bigarelli, aLombard master sculptor Guido or Guidetto di Bonagiunta Bigarelli, known as Guido da Como (1220 - c. 1257). The Lucca cathedral portico is said to have once sheltered money-changers who traded with travellers using the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route linking Rome to Canterbury, England, via France and Switzerland.
