The Ponte dell'Accademia, Venice, the only wooden bridge to cross the Grand Canal

The Ponte dell'Accademia is one of only four bridges to span the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. It crosses near the southern end of the canal, and is named for the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, which from 1807 to 2004 was housed in the Scuola della Carità together with the Gallerie dell'Accademia, which is still there. The bridge links the sestieri of Dorsoduro and San Marco. The project was entrusted to Alfred Neville, an engineer specialized in building iron structures, and was inaugurated in 1854. Due to its very poor state, the bridge was demolished in 1933. A temporary wooden bridge was then built in only 37 days, based on Eugenio Miozzi’s design, which peculiarity lied in its capacity to be maintained without blocking its access, either over or under! This project ended up being more permanent than temporary, given that eighty years later the bridge is still there.
