The Great Hall of Oakham Castle, Oakham, Rutland, England, UK

The photo shows the front of the Great Hall of Oakham Castle. The building dates from around 1190 and is one of the finest examples of Norman secular architecture of the period in England. An old custom decrees that every peer of the realm, on setting foot in the town for the first time, must present a horseshoe to be hung inside the castle. The custom has been followed for at least 500 years and as a result there are around 240 ornate horseshoes hanging on the walls inside.
