Haemoglobin subunit, illustration

Illustration of a haemoglobin A(2) subunit bound to ferrocyanide. Haemoglobin is the principal protein component of erythrocytes (red blood cells). Each molecule is made up of two alpha subunits and two beta subunits. Haemoglobin A(2) is a variant of the normal alpha subunit and is found in 2 to 3 percent of red blood cells. Ferrocyanide is a catalyst of haemoglobin oxidation.
