Early Stevens (AJS) Motorcycle, Wolverhampton, 1909-1914.

Early Stevens (AJS) Motorcycle, Wolverhampton, 1909-1914. A. J. Stevens & Company (AJS) was founded by four Stevens brothers, George, Jack, Joe, and Harry, in 1909 after problems with a previous partnership to develop motorcycles with the Wearwell Motor Carriage Company between 1899 and 1909. The first two machines were produced in their Retreat Street works and exhibited at the 1910 Cycle Show at Olympia in London. A particular success was their triumphant preformances in the 1914 Isle of Man TT Races which boosted sales. From then on the company expanded enormously, building a new factory at Graiseley Hill which produced up to 600 motorcyles a week in the mid 1920s. Unfortunately, sales then declined and the company was wound up in late 1931.
