Norham Castle one of the most important of the Border castles was built in 1121 by the Bishops of Durham a long and turbulent history saw many famous visitors and it's place in history though little known is significant in the Wars and Peace of the Scottish Border. Visitors have included King Edward I, King David of Scotland, Robert the Bruce, Turner, Beatrix Potter, Field Marshal Montogomery. Famous for it's part in the Scottish Wars of Independence it lost much of it's importance as a stronghold when it fell to James IV of Scotland just before the Battle of Flodden in 1513 in which the Scottish King and much of the nobility of Scotland were to fall.
