Light microscopy of a stratified squamous epithelium characterized by many layers of cells most of which are flattened (squashed) into thin and elongated shapes and show a central nucleus. Many of these squamous cells are held together with intercellular junctions but nearer the surface the cells are stuck together with thickened cell membrane proteins and lipids. Surface cells lose their nuclei and are continuously shed from the epithelium a process known as exfoliation. Magnification x300 when printed at width 10 cm.
