To accommodate wheels in service, with treads narrowerthan 3 ins., the committee deems it advisable to recommend thesecond brake head and shoe illustrated in Fig. 8. This head isadapted for use on any of the narrower tread of wheels, viz.,those less than 3 ins. wide. The brake shoe can be used either flanged or unflanged, the unflanged shoe being reversible uponthe same wheel, and the flange shoe will be reversible by chang-ing it to the other end of the brake beam, thus
