To avoid the wear caused by frequent joints, variousforms of compressed rails have been proposed; consistingof two or more parts breaking joint. One form has beencontrived in which the section is vertically halved; anotherof three parts, a head placed on top of a double verticalweb. Fig. 139 shows what would seemto answer any purpose (if compound railsare at all allowable). The joint is heredivided into four parts, so that the strengthof the bar at any point is reduced onlyone fourth. In bolting the parts togetherthe joints should be left open enough (see in advance) toallow for contraction; and the bolt-holes, as before noticed,should be longer than the bolts. (This enlargement, extend-ing only in the direction of contraction, and not in the lineof the force.) The upper part of such a rail should be
