In this 1920 painting, Sancho Panza, the neighbor Alonso asks to be his squire, listens to Don Quixote addressing Dulcinea.
The Ingenious Don Quixote de la Mancha is the title of a fiction novel, published in two volumes (1605 and 1615) by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. A retired country gentleman Alonso Quisano takes the name of Don Quixote de la Mancha and goes about the countryside in search of adventure. Thinking of himself as a knight—as in the days of chivalry—he has a lady love, a neighboring farm girl who knows nothing of all this. He names her Dulcinea del Toboso and dedicates his adventures to her. In this painting from 1920, Sancho Panza, the neighbor Alonso asks to be his squire, listens to "his master" as he addresses Dulcinea (she is not there literally - only in his mind).
