Theoretically, the exact date of Sevres porcelain can be determinedby the letters which were used in conjunction with the mark of theinterlacing Ls. All pieces marked with this cipher, without an accom-panying date letter, are supposed to have been produced at Vincennesprevious to 1753. This system of dating, however, cannot always berelied upon, as we find the intertwining L mark without any dateletters on many pieces which belong to a period later than 1753. Thedecorators were not always careful to add the letter of the year to themark, in consequence of which numerous pieces are attributed to. In the Sevres Mu 18.
