Friedrick Perls (1893-1970), German-born Jewish psychiatrist and psychotherapist. Born in 1893 in Germany, Perls graduated in 1926 and then worked at the Institute for Brain Damaged Soldiers in Frankfurt. In the 1940s Perls developed a new type of therapy with his wife Laura Perls (as they were not satisfied with earlier techniques) and coined the term Gestalt Therapy. It related to Gestalt psychology, which emphasized examining the person as a whole, and the Gestalt Theoretical Psychotherapy of Hans-Jurgen Walter. At the core was the promotion of awareness, the awareness of the unity of all present feelings and behaviours, and the contact between the self and its environment.
