The British journal of dermatology . opic examination showsthat it produces the same picture as given by the addition of a traceof an acid (Figs. 9 and 13); based also on the electron theory ofThomson and Rutherford (^^ ^-), and on my work in connectionwith chemo-therapy (^^ ^^), which suggests that non-metals act asreducing agents by forming active hydrogen, I believe that colloidalsilicic acid acts as an amboceptor in virtue of the condenser effect itexerts on the protein particles used as the complement. Colloidalsilicic acid reduces the negative electricity on the surface of theparticles.

Colloidalsilicic acid reduces the negative electricity on the surface of theparticles. This leads to an agglomeration of many of the particlesand to a precipitation of some of the clumps formed (Fig. 9). Whilethese changes are taking place there is at first an increase and thena rapid diminution in the surface tension of the liquid is this alteration of surface tension which is responsible for thehaemolysis. Colloidal aluminium hydroxide, on the other hand, gives THE RATIONALE OV THK WASSKKMAXX liKACTiOX. 47.
