Irkutsk, Russia - september 12, 2017- The Znamensky Convent in Irkutsk is one of the oldest monasteries in Siberia. The construction of the monastery

The temple was built between 1757 and 1794 according to the type of Irkutsk architecture of the middle of the XVIII century. It was built on the site of a wooden church, cut down in 1693. The limits and other facilities were completed within a few years. Adjacent to the main volume of the temple is a refectory and an octagonal bell tower above the porch. The St. Nicholas Chapel adjoins the northern facade and is balanced from the south by the Kazan chapel. The temple has preserved objects of ancient decoration: sparkling gilded baroque carved iconostases, icons, salaries of Irkutsk silversmiths. With the arrival of Soviet power in Irkutsk, the temple remains at the disposal of the local diocese — however, departments of hydroaviators were placed in religious premises. On the night of February 6-7, 1920, the Supreme Ruler of Russia Alexander Kolchak and the chairman of the Council of Ministers Viktor Pepelyaev were shot near the temple.
